JACKSON, Tenn. - Oklahoma City University dispatched Shorter (Ga.) 71-49 on Wednesday to open play in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament at Oman Arena.
The No. 1-seeded Stars (30-3) will face Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at 10:45 a.m. Friday. OCU notched its ninth 30-win season in 12 seasons and its 24th consecutive victory this season.
OCU took advantage of its inside game as Starr Fairbanks recorded 22 points and five rebounds, while Holly Hardin tallied 20 points and six rebounds. Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, knocked in 11 of 17 shots from the field.
Laura Duncan added nine points and a team-high five assists for OCU. Lauren Gober had seven points and six rebounds, while Chontaye Walter grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Stars owned a 41-34 rebounding advantage, accumulating 20 offensive boards. Shorter (22-10) committed 18 turnovers, while OCU limited its turnovers to five.
"For us, it was an average performance," OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. "Our posts dominated, but our guards struggled shooting. We'll need to shoot better to get through the second round. Overall, we're pleased, especially with how we took care of the ball."
OCU built a 16-2 lead early as Shorter hit only one of its first six shots from the floor. The Stars cruised, pushing their lead to 36-17 on K.J. Johnson's free throws with 3:48 left in the first period.
The Stars built their largest lead at 71-47 after Fairbanks' transition bucket with 46 seconds remaining.
