JACKSON, Tenn. - Ashley Lillard provided the winning free throws with 51 seconds left as Union (Tenn.) ousted Oklahoma City University 63-61 on Tuesday at Oman Arena in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament semifinals.
In a matchup of the NAIA's winningest women's basketball programs over the past nine years, Union (35-2) halted OCU's 26-game win streak and advanced to the national championship game 9 p.m. Tuesday. The Stars ended their season 32-4.
Starr Fairbanks and Chontaye Walter tallied 16 points each to propel the Stars. Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, hauled in eight rebounds and sank 8 of 9 shots from the field. Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, downed four 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds.
Donica Cosby had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Holly Hardin recorded eight points and 11 rebounds for OCU.
Union's Zeinab Chan topped all scorers with 25 points while pulling in 11 rebounds. Chan's teammate Kaitlin Dudley chipped in 21 points.
Walter canned a 3-pointer to knot the game 61-61 with 1:22 showing on the clock. OCU managed two missed 3s and a turnover the rest of the way.
Jessica Graves stole the ball away from Cosby with six seconds remaining, then missed a free throw at the other end. Walter tried a long 3-pointer that Lavanda Ross got a piece of as time expired.
In the second half, Union struck for a 9-2 run to take a 49-48 lead on Dudley's follow shot with 11:53 left. The two teams forged four ties the rest of the way.
Dudley's lay-in put Union ahead 59-56 at the 5:26 mark, then Fairbanks cut OCU's deficit to 59-58 with 2:39 left. Chan answered for Union with a layup with 2:16 remaining.
Walter spurred OCU, scoring eight points in a 13-0 run late in the first half. Walter knocked down a 3-pointer to spark the Stars surge with 8:30 remaining in the half.
Lauren Gober tied the game 27-27 by sinking a trey of her own at the 8:05 mark. Walter had a putback to give OCU the edge 29-27 at 5:43 left in the first.
Fairbanks hit a lay-in with 4:56 left, then Walter's 3 capped the spree at 3:34 left.
