GARDEN CITY, Kan. - Oklahoma City University volleyball coach Jen Gomez has been chosen for induction into the Garden City Community College (Kan.) Athletic Hall of Fame.
Gomez (nee' Salmans) will be inducted along with Kansas City Royals general manager and former Garden City baseball player Dayton Moore and athletic trainer Steve Barrett on Friday at the Garden City, Kan., Clarion Inn.
Gomez has led the Stars to a 111-46 record since OCU restarted its volleyball program four years ago. Gomez picked up her 100th career victory Sept. 29 against St. Gregory's. OCU also knocked off fourth-ranked Columbia (Mo.) on Oct. 17 in St. Charles, Mo., beating its highest-ranked opponent ever.
At OCU, Gomez has mentored six NAIA scholar-athlete winners, 12 all-Sooner Athletic Conference players, six all-region selections and two-time all-American outside-right-side hitter Xiaoting Ma.
As a player at Garden City, Gomez became an NJCAA all-American and academic all-American as a sophomore while playing in 1996-97. She went on to play at Southern Colorado, now known as Colorado State-Pueblo. Gomez earned all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, academic all-conference and all-region and university female athlete of the year honors in Pueblo, Colo.
Gomez entered coaching at Colorado State-Pueblo, spending three years as a full-time assistant and one as a student assistant. She spent two years as an assistant at Angelo State (Texas) before becoming OCU head coach.
