SILVIS, Ill. - Oklahoma City University fired the low round of the tournament to capture its seventh men's golf national championship in the NAIA Championships on Friday at TPC Deere Run.

The top-ranked Stars added to their national crowns from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. OCU now owns the most men's golf national titles of any NAIA institution. OCU has 38 national championships in all sports and has won an NAIA title every year since 1994.

OCU recorded a 293-299-304-288-1,184 to be five strokes better than second-ranked defending champion Oklahoma Christian, which shot 291-301-306-291-1,189. Third-ranked Malone (Ohio) took third at six shots back, and 10th-ranked South Carolina Beaufort finished seven strokes off the pace.

The Stars set a single-season OCU record with nine victories in 12 starts this campaign. OCU had finished fourth last year and third place in the 2008 NAIA Championships since taking its last national title.

"I've been doing this for 13 years, and this is the best group of kids," OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. "We travel a lot. Whether it's a van to Iowa or my boring team meetings at 10 o'clock at night, we're always together. They are so fun to be around. There's not a sour apple in the bunch. You tell them to run through the window, and they ask forwards or backwards. They're a great group of kids. It's been a wonderful season. I've really enjoyed this year."

Julian Valenciana of the Stars finished eight strokes behind individual champion Justin Lower of Malone. Valenciana, a senior from Monterrey, Mexico, carded 69-73-75-71-288 to tie for third place. As part of the top 16 individuals in the tournament, Valenciana took all-tournament honors.

OCU's Clark Collier turned in a 72-74-74-78-298. The sophomore from Edmond, Okla., tied for 21st place.

Taylor Artman and Michael Palmer went low Friday to help the Stars seal the win. Palmer, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, moved up in the individual standings with a 79-76-80-70-305, and Artman, a sophomore from Norman, Okla., contributed an 80-80-75-71-306.

Ben Bench compiled a 73-76-82-76-307 for OCU. Bench, a senior from Oklahoma City, earned an NAIA scholar-athlete award and CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine academic all-district on the college-division at-large team with his 3.91 cumulative grade-point average majoring in biochemical sciences.

"We've been on a roll," Blaser said. "As a coach to have three kids that can contend every time and you know what you're going to get from those guys, it makes my job easy. I know they're going to be in contention every time."

The high temperature on the par-71, 6,983-yard layout was 68 degrees, and the wind reached 9 mph.

Southern Nazarene finished eighth, while Wayland Baptist tied for ninth as a team. Axel Ochoa and Oscar Stark of Oklahoma Christian and Michael Loppnow of Wayland Baptist were also all-tournament.
