RAPID CITY, S.D. - British Columbia won the NAIA women's golf championships, ending Oklahoma City University's unprecedented run of national championships Friday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.

Fourth-ranked British Columbia fired a 301-311-311-301-1,224 to top the second-ranked Stars, who shot a 308-302-314-307-1,231. OCU captured the last five national titles. Before OCU's string, no school had won more than two NAIA women's golf crowns in a row.

British Columbia had been the last school other than Oklahoma City to win the NAIA women's golf championship. British Columbia took the title in 2004, while OCU was runner-up that year. The Stars have also been runner-up in 2001 and 2003. British Columbia is second in the NAIA to OCU with three national titles in the 16 NAIA Championship events.

OCU had the nation's second longest streak of national women's golf championships. Only Methodist (N.C.) and Rollins (Fla.) have won as many as four consecutive national women's golf crowns. Methodist has won 13 consecutive national titles - two in NCAA Division II and 11 in NCAA Division III.

"British Columbia played their best as a team," OCU coach M.J. Desbiens said. "They played better than us, and that's what made the difference."

Laura Jones spearheaded the Stars with a 76-74-77-77-304 to finish third place in the medalist race. California Baptist's Nathalie Silva captured the individual national championship with a 74-76-75-76-301.

Jones, a junior from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, buried birdies on the par-4, 312-yard 16th hole and the par-5, 470-yard 18th hole. Jones also had five bogeys, all on the front nine, and a double bogey.

"Laura struggled at the beginning, but finished well," Desbiens said. "I'm definitely disappointed, but proud of each one of us."

OCU's Paige Martin tied for fourth place with a 79-75-78-73-305. Martin, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., sank birdies on the par-3, 137-yard seventh hole, par-4, 363-yard eighth hole, par-4, 365-yard 11th hole and par-5, 470-yard 18th hole.

Morgan Gay of OCU carded a 76-76-79-80-311 to tie for 11th place. Gay birdied the par-5, 470-yard 18th hole to go with nine bogeys Friday.

Gay, Jones and Martin took all-tournament honors by finishing among the top 15 individuals. Jones was also all-tournament as a freshman.

Taylor Howard contributed a 77-77-80-79-313 for OCU to place 16th. Howard, a freshman from Ada, Okla., knocked in birdies on the par-4, 341-yard sixth hole and the par-4, 338-yard 14th hole.

Tanya Tibshraeny of OCU had an 81-77-81-78-317 to tie for 27th place. Tibshraeny birdied the par-4, 336-yard 13th hole while putting together bogeys and a double bogey.

Lubbock Christian finished eighth with a 317-311-324-328-1,280. Anna Schopp of Lubbock Christian tied for 20th with a 73-76-84-83-316. Southern Nazarene's Andrea Rojas also tied for 20th with a 78-78-81-79-316, while the Crimson Storm shot 325-345-330-325-1,325 as a team to be 16th.
