TOKYO - Former Oklahoma City University all-American Garrett Regan helped Team Canada to a fifth-place finish in the Fifth World University Baseball Championships completed Saturday.
Regan, a first baseman from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, hit .333 with seven runs scored, four doubles, a home run and six RBIs for Canada in the tournament. Regan finished his OCU career this year, posting a .362 average with nine home runs and 54 RBIs as a senior.
In the fifth-place game, Regan went 1-for-4 in Canada's 15-14 win Friday at Meiji Jingu Stadium. Regan also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI in Canada's 18-0 win against Sri Lanka on July 31.
Regan went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in Canada's 17-3 win over China on Aug. 4. He pounded two doubles and a two-run home run in the second inning of that contest.
"Garrett attained one of the highest honors a player could have in representing his country," OCU coach Denney Crabaugh said. "It's a testimony to his baseball skills. He displayed a great deal of determination to come back from the injury he had a couple of years ago."
Cuba rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th against the United States to capture the championship 4-3 on Saturday at Jingu Stadium. Japan defeated Korea 9-0 in the bronze-medal game.
"It was the most amazing experience of my life," Regan said. "We were competing against the best college baseball players in the world. The Cubans were basically a bunch of big leaguers. It was amazing to see how different countries approach the game in different ways and how much respect the Japanese show for the game."
At OCU, Regan hit .391 with 191 hits, 53 doubles, six triples, 18 homers, 99 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in two years. Regan became an honorable-mention NAIA all-American, all-Region VI and all-Sooner Athletic Conference as a junior, hitting .418 with 29 doubles, three triples, nine homers, 45 RBIs and 12 steals batting leadoff in 2008.
In 2009, Regan suffered a season-ending injury in the season opener after making one at-bat. He came back from the injury in 2010.
During his career, Regan aided the Stars to two NAIA World Series appearances, a Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title, the NAIA Opening-Round Group 5 Tournament crown, the NAIA Region VI championship and Mid-South Super Regional championship.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Regan in the 50th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
OCU boasts of the most wins in college baseball since 1991 with 1,023.
