Oklahoma City University shortstop Kirk Walker has been named Sooner
Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year by the coaches of the
league.
Walker, a senior from Chandler, Ariz., led the Stars with a .448 batting average and leads the NAIA at 1.774 hits per game. He also is in the national top 10 with 94 hits, 146 total bases, 22 doubles, 67 runs and his .448 average.
Coach of the Year honors belong to Oklahoma Baptist University's Bobby Cox. Cox led the Bison to second place in the regular season, a No. 5 spot in the final regular season national rankings. It's been a season to remember for Cox, who was inducted into the NAIA Baseball Hall of Fame, collected his 1,000th career win and will take the Bison to the national postseason for the third time in program history.
Joining Walker on the First Team are catchers Nate Peterson of Lubbock Christian and Chad Carman of OCU, first baseman Kevin Hennessey of Wayland Baptist, second-baseman Richard Bohlken of Lubbock Christian, third-baseman Miguel Pagan of Wayland Baptist, utility Eddie Allen of Wayland Baptist, outfielders Ryan Meade of Lubbock Christian, Anthony Lopez of Oklahoma Baptist, Brandt Barnes of Rogers State and Ruben Sosa of Oklahoma City; designated hitter J.C. Aguayo of Northwestern Oklahoma State, starting pitchers Richie Mirowski of Oklahoma Baptist, Marcus Limon of Wayland Baptist, Grant Cosby of Rogers State, Rich Hawkins of Oklahoma City and reliever Kyle Brule of OBU.
Oklahoma City, which leads the NAIA in fielding percentage, dominated the Gold Glove honors with Carmen at catcher, Miguel Beltran at first, Dearth Parker at second, Scott Dalrymple at third, Walker at short, Mark Purser in left and Corey Theriot at pitcher. Chase Glaum of Southern Nazarene won the award in center field and Connor Bridgman of USAO in right.
Making the Second Team from Rogers State are catcher Lance Rymel and utility Randy Ramirez; from OBU are catcher Mitchell Prophet, second baseman Terrence Buchanan and starting pitcher Chad Hardison; from OCU Beltran, designated hitter Julien Pollard and Theriot; from LCU are third baseman David Cruz, shortstop Ryan Burnaman and starting pitcher Lucas Whitmore; from USAO are Bridgman and starting pitcher Caleb Martin; from Oklahoma Christian is outfielder Clint Bowker; from Mid-America Christian is outfielder Jeff Eubank; from Wayland Baptist is outfielder Aldo Mendez; and from Northwestern Oklahoma State is reliever Derek Epps.
