OKLAHOMA CITY (May 12, 2012) - No.19 Lubbock Christian University collected their first win in the Oklahoma City bracket of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, as Karl Seiter went 4-for-4 with three runs-batted-in and pitcher Tyler Rogers completed his ninth complete game of the season in a 6-2 victory to eliminate York College (Neb.) Saturday afternoon. The win places LCU in an elimination game at 6 p.m. Saturday evening against Mount Marty College.
LCU had the opening lead after a two-out single to left centerfield by Jason Fisch in the first inning, but York tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with doubles from Brett Nathan and Brett Wise. The Chaps regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning with Brent Leslie grounding into an error to score Kamron Bownds from third base. The first extra-base hit of the game for LCU gave LCU a 4-1 lead, as Seiter scored a pair with a double to right centerfield. Richard Bohlken hit his 12th homer of the season and his 61st career shot with a blast over the scoreboard in left field for a run in the seventh inning to extend the Chaps lead to 5-1. Seiter closed the LCU scoring with a double in the ninth inning to score Ryan Burnaman from first base. An error in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the Panthers to cut the deficit to 6-2, but it would be the only run of the inning for the Panthers.
Rogers improved to 10-4 in the complete game win. In nine innings, he allowed two runs (one earned) off six hits. He struck out 10 batters to surpass 200 strikeouts in his LCU career. Rogers had a stretch of 13 batters faced without allowing a hit in the game. York starter Thomas Korn pitched 8.2 innings and allowed six runs (four earned) off 11 hits and struck out six batters. He suffered the loss and fell to 6-5.
Seiter and Bohlken extended their hit streaks to 18 games with their hits in the game. Bohlken has reached base safely in 36 consecutive games and Seiter has reached in 25 straight games.
LCU improves to 34-21 with the win and is now 10-3 all-time in Opening Round play. York ends their season at 39-19, as they went 0-2 in the Opening Round. The meeting was the fourth meeting this season between the two teams and LCU won all four. LCU meets Mount Marty College, who they defeated in the 2010 Opening Round in Lubbock to advance to the NAIA World Series. A win places LCU into the 11 a.m. game on Sunday, but a loss would eliminate the Chaps.
