OKLAHOMA CITY (May 30, 2012) - Oklahoma Christian golfers Preston Wilkins and Logan Herbst have been selected to play on the U.S. team in the 2012 World University Golf Championship.
The 72-hole event is scheduled for July 2-7 at Ypsilon Golf Resort in Liberec, Czech Republic. One of the co-coaches for the U.S. team will be OC Director of Golf David Lynn.
The players selected for the team were the top three U.S.-born players from the NAIA and two top U.S.-born player s from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Herbst, a junior from Fairview, has earned NAIA All-America first-team honors the past two years and was a third-team pick in 2010. Wilkins, a senior from Tulsa, was a four-time NAIA All-America pick, making the third team in 2010 and the second team in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
The pair helped the Eagles finish second last week at the NAIA Championship at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore.
"It's a great honor to have two of our own athletes from Oklahoma Christian representing the NAIA at the 2012 World University Championship," Lynn said. "Logan and Preston are both coming off very successful individual and team seasons for the Eagles. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an athlete to represent the United States in a team competition. I know they are both extremely excited to get to Europe and start the games."
The World University Golf Championship will include both a team championship and an individual championship. Four U.S. players will play in the team event each day, with the lowest three scores counting toward the team score, while the fifth player will play as an individual.
The other players selected for the team were Josh Manske of Grand View (Iowa), Mitch Tucker of Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College and True Graves of Odessa (Texas) College.
Lynn will coach the U.S. team along with Mike Hagen, the men's golf coach at Indian Hills. It will be the second time Lynn has participated as a coach in the event, as he also helped guide the U.S. team during the 2008 World University Golf Championship in Sun City, South Africa.
