OBU Decathlete Jonathan Hilton
Theron Stoltzfus put Oklahoma Baptist on the scoreboard in the first
day of action with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters Thursday.
Stoltzfus, who was seeded seventh, gave the Bison three more points than expected in the event in his 31:22.54 performance and OBU almost got more than that. Lance Goodwin missed scoring for the Bison by one place, finishing ninth in 32:23.54.
The Bison finished the day in 10th place with the five points from Stoltzfus.
OBU kept many of its cards in play Thursday in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Fresno, Calif.
The biggest exception was OBU’s 4x800 relay team. Seeded first, OBU’s Prophet Bailey, Michael Elizondo, Justin Stroup and Bryce Bell finished 12th at 7:44.06 and did not advance to the finals.
John Armstrong finished 27th in the hammer throw in the only Bison field event of the meet, tossing the weight 154-9. Armstrong was ranked 28th.
In the men’s 200 meters, OBU moved forward four of its five entrants. Top-ranked Mike Rodgers (2nd, 21.35), third-ranked Dominique Matthews (6th, 21.52), fifth-ranked B.J. Bashorun (16th, 21.93) and seventh-ranked James Hall (17th, 21.96) all moved to the semifinals. Sixth-ranked Derek Nettles finished 20th at 22.28 and did not advance.
In the men’s 400 hurdles, top-ranked Ross Harlan and fourth-ranked Lamar Baskin advanced to the semifinals. Baskin had the second-best time in the prelims at 53.65 seconds and Harlan was third at 53.68. Adam Betterton (26th at 57.30) and Kurt Thomas (28th at 1:02.68) did not advance.
Mike Rodgers, the favorite in the 100, and ninth-seeded Dominique Matthews moved forward with the third- and ninth-best times, respectively, at 10.62 seconds and 11.01.
Durrell Williams, T.J. Lightsey and A.J. Carter moved on in the 800 meters – Williams in seventh at 1:53.39, Lightsey in 11th at 1:53.49 and Carter in 14th at 1:53.31 in the first round.
Justin Stroup, seeded 11th in the 1500, was 10th in the prelims at 3:53.48 and will move on to the finals.
Baskin, B.J. Bashorun, Matthews and Rodgers advanced the 4x100 relay team to the semifinals at 40.37 seconds.
The women’s 4x100 of Amanda Mayfield, Aletha Hubbard, Ebonique Wilson and Sherene Pinnock had the best prelim time at 46.56 seconds.
The women’s 4x800 team of Kisha Gaspard, Shayna Legg, Megan Henley and Kyli Bean are ranked first and had the fifth-best semifinal time at 9:12.99.

In the women’s heptathlon, Jessica Haynes has 2142 points at the midpoint.
Decathlete Jonathan Hilton has 3518 points through five events, including 878 in the high jump, which he won with a height of 6-9.75.
