FRESNO,
Calif. -- St. Gregory's University brought home two national
championships Saturday at the 2007 NAIA National Outdoor Track and
Field Championships in Fresno, Calif.
Its 4X400 relay team,
which won the school's first ever national championship
in March at the indoor competition, brought home another title
with a time of 3:07.55. Sophomore William McCaskill, part of that relay
team, added to his gold with a 47.07 in the 400-meter dash.
"These guys are
as tough as nails," said SGU coach Micheal Houston. "They've put in a
lot of hard work from the first of the year, and it has paid off."
The SGU 4X400 team is
made up of McCaskill, Joe Hughes, Jerry Jones and Deshaun Thorton.
Houston said he believed this is the first time a 4X400 team has won
national titles in both the outdoor and indoor event in the same year.
They not only won a title, but also broke the indoor record by nearly
2-1/2 seconds in March.
The 400-meter dash was
dominated by SGU on Saturday. McCaskill edged out teammate Jones by .13
seconds for the championship. Hughes, a junior, finished eighth in
the event. McCaskill and Hughes finished second and third,
respectively, at the indoor championships.
Earlier this year,
McCaskill was one of only three runners from the NAIA invited to the
2007 AT&T USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. He
finished eighth there.
