WACO, TX – Former South Plains College track and field coach and current Lubbock Christian University assistant cross county coach James Morris is among 20 finalists for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2007.
The ballot was formulated Tuesday at a meeting of the 28-member selection committee at the Hall of Fame museum in Waco. There were more than 100 nominees from the committee and fan submissions.
Morris was track and field and cross country coach at South Plains College from 1982-2001, during which time he coached 60 individual national champions, 13 national champion relay teams and 16 Olympians. He led SPC to an NJCAA indoor track championship in 1986 and to cross country national titles in 1991, 1996 and 1997. Semi-retired, Morris now assists Clyde Neff as
Six of the 20 finalists from the primary ballot and two of 12 from the veterans ballot will be chosen for induction. The class will be announced in mid-September, and the annual induction banquet is in February in Waco.
