Jackson, Tenn. (March 21, 2008) – There were a lot of milestones accomplished Friday afternoon at Oman Arena by the #5 seeded and #17 nationally ranked Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals, and the most important one was they ended the milestone season of #1 seeded and #2 nationally ranked Lee University with a dominating 76-60 win in the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament to advance the Quarterfinals.
Lee University came in with a 32-2 record, which featured a school single-season record for wins and a 27-game winning streak, but the Lady Chaps played a complete 40-minute game and had arguably their best performance in an NAIA National Tournament contest. Carolyn Manning scored a career-high 33 points, going 10 for 13 from the field and making 13 of 14 from the free-throw line. Her 13 free throws is a team single-game best for this season. It was one of many marks accomplished by the Lady Chaps. Jordan Hampton hit a pair of three-point field goals to surpass Angie Taylor’s career mark for three-point field goals with 188 to become LCU’s all-time career leader in the category. Sierra Wilcox-Lovorn, whose eight points places her with exactly 1,000 in her LCU career, broke the single-season assist mark with four to place her two ahead of Krista Lent’s 1990 school record of 189.
LCU, now 25-9, fell behind early with Lee scoring the game’s first four points, before they roared back with a 17-3 run highlighted by three-point field goals from Hampton and Brandi Raindl. The Lady Flames responded with a 10-0 run of their own to eventually tie the game at 17-17, but the Lady Chaps never allowed Lee to take the lead and surged for a 38-34 halftime lead. In the second half, Wilcox-Lovorn and Hampton combined for three-pointers to open the half and the Lady Chaps went on a 13-0 run. LCU eventually took a 24-point 72-48 lead with 3:24 remaining before Lee out-scored LCU 12-4 the rest of the way.
Lee had not lost by more than seven points in their two prior losses and they were unable to get consistent production from two-time NAIA All-American Jessica Still. The Lady Flames senior was held scoreless in the first half before breaking out with 11 points and a trio of three-point field goals in the second half. Lee had dominated the boards in the first half, including ten offensive boards compared to nine defensive rebounds from LCU, but LCU went on to out-rebound Lee 17-13 in the second half to even the rebound totals at 31. LCU out-scored Lee 40-26 in points in the paint. The 60 points produced by Lee is a season-low.
The Lady Chaps improved to 7-4 all-time in NAIA National Tournament play and they advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 05-06 season. LCU will play their quarterfinal contest Saturday night at 6 p.m. inside Oman Arena against the winner of the match-up between Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and Wylie College.
