KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University advanced to the semifinals of the 71st NAIA Division I men’s basketball tournament with an 86-66 quarterfinals win over Lee (Tenn.) on Saturday at Municipal Auditorium.
The seventh-seeded Stars upended No. 2 seed Lee. Seventh-ranked OCU (29-7) compiled as much as a 30-point advantage on the way to its 13th consecutive win. Second-ranked Lee ended its season 33-2 and snapped a 13-game win streak.
Ollie Bailey, a senior from Chicago, led OCU with 27 points to go with eight rebounds. Kameron Gray, a senior from Oakland, Calif., posted a triple-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Stars.
The Stars built a 34-9 lead on Bailey’s bucket with 6:15 remaining in the first half. Gray’s free throws gave OCU its largest lead of the night at 45-15 with 1:12 remaining in the first period.
Lee knocked in only three of its first 27 shots from the floor and hit only one of its first 10 3-point shots. By halftime, Lee shot 5-for-32 from the field and 1-for-12 on 3-point shots. The Stars also owned a 27-14 rebounding advantage. OCU led 45-17.
“I thought the first half we were really, really good,” OCU coach Ray Harper said. “We defended like we wanted to defend them. We really passed the ball well. We played as about as good a half as we could hope for.
“The second half we didn’t have the same energy. We dropped off their shooters more than we wanted to. The bottom line is, we got a win and moved into the final four. It’s good to be playing.”
Lee outscored OCU in the second half. Lee sliced its deficit to 74-60 on Kellen Pickel’s 3-pointer at the 4:20 mark of the second. Ronald Taylor drained a trey to push the Stars’ advantage to 81-64 with 2:37 remaining.
The Stars moved into the NAIA semifinals against Campbellsville (Ky.) at 8:45 p.m. Monday at Municipal Auditorium. OCU advanced to the semis for the third year in a row.
Campbellville beat OCU 76-57 on Nov. 24 in Campbellville, Ky.
“They’re awfully good,” Harper said. “You don’t get to the final four unless you have a nice club. Coach Keith Adkins does a great job. He’s a great guy. They’ll be ready to play as well as we will.”
