LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University shared the lead with Wayland Baptist through two rounds Monday in the NAIA Region VI men's golf championship at Hillcrest Country Club.
The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, shot 283-291–574, while ninth-ranked Wayland Baptist recorded 290-284–574 to be knotted for the lead through 36 holes. Six-time national champion OCU seeks its 12th consecutive regional and Sooner Athletic Conference crowns in the final round Tuesday.
Anthony Michael spearheaded the Stars' effort Monday. The junior from Johannesburg, South Africa, carded 67-71–138 to lead the race for the individual regional and conference titles. Michael led Wayland Baptist's Michael Loppnow by two strokes as Loppnow had a 71-69–140.
Michael sank 15 birdies along the way, but ended with 3-putts on five holes.
"The weather was perfect for scoring well, but we made mental mistakes," OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. "Anthony played well. The greens are a little bumpy. His putter got a little cold. If he gets his putter going, I like his odds of shooting good numbers."
Kevin Stinson of Wayland Baptist was in third with a 72-70–142. OCU's Colin Nel and Julian Valenciana were each tied for fifth place. Nel fired a 72-72–144, while Valenciana shot 70-74–144.
OCU's Stafford Gray and Clay Parks were each tied for 21st. Gray had a 74-76–150, while Parks shot 76-74–150.
Top-ranked Oklahoma Christian stood in third place with a 284-296–580. Bruno Buccolo and Axel Ochoa of Oklahoma Christian each shot 144. Lubbock Christian was in fourth with a 303-293–596. No. 10 Southern Nazarene was in seventh, and Oklahoma Baptist was in eighth.
"I'm excited that we're tied for the lead," Blaser said. "I'm disappointed because we didn't play as well as we should. We wasted a lot of shots. Hopefully we can finish strong tomorrow and come home with the title.
"We're going to come out guns blazing tomorrow. It will be fun to be paired with Oklahoma Christian and Wayland. It ought to be an exciting day."
