EDMOND, Okla. – Oklahoma City University held a 13-stroke advantage through 18 holes in the NAIA Region VI women's golf championships on Monday at Rose Creek Golf Club.
The top-ranked three-time defending NAIA champion Stars fired a 315 to lead fifth-ranked Lubbock Christian by 13 shots. No. 12 Southern Nazarene shot 330 to be third, while Northwestern was in sixth.
Tamara Campbell and Ashley Sholer spearheaded OCU, tying for second place through the first round with a pair of 77s. Campbell paced the field with 14 pars, while Sholer shot a 37 on the back nine.
The Stars are aiming for their sixth consecutive regional and Sooner Athletic Conference championships.
"Tamara and Ashley knew they could have done better," OCU coach M.J. Desbiens said. "Tamara played steady golf. She's playing with confidence right now."
OCU's Christina Cung recorded an 80 to be in fifth, while Sydney Cox tied for sixth with an 81. Kylie Frederick carded an 83. Laura Jones, playing as an individual, shot an 88.
"We talked about course management, and we agreed that we could have done better," Desbiens said. "We had to get adjusted to the wind and the greens, and it showed in our scores. The front nine is playing really tough because of the wind changes.
"I think we'll do well tomorrow. We'll know what to expect. Putting together a low score will prepare us well for nationals and give us confidence."
Kelly Rainbolt shot a first round-low 76 to lead Lubbock Christian. Rainbolt had a 36 on the back nine.
Lillie West led Southern Nazarene by shooting a 77 to tie for second place.
The tournament concludes with the final round Tuesday starting at 8 a.m.
