OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University added the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament championship to its regular-season crown by defeating St. Gregory's 8-0 on Saturday night at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Stars advanced to the title game by beating Lubbock Christian 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. Third-ranked defending NAIA champion OCU increased its winning streak to 21 in knocking off ninth-ranked Lubbock Christian and No. 11 St. Gregory's.
OCU, which has won the SAC title 13 of the last 14 years, will be in action next in the NAIA Region VI Championships on Thursday and Friday in Farmers Branch, Texas.
Against St. Gregory's, Amanda Howard put OCU on the board by nailing a two-run home run to left field in the second inning. Katie Carroll drove in two runs with a base hit, whileMelody Murphy hit a two-run double in the third.
Mindy Crabaugh added an RBI base hit in the fourth, then Howard scored on an error in the fifth.
Howard went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Murphy was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in. Crabaugh went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Jenni Gaby improved to 13-1, allowing only two base runners on Lauren Hart's base hit and an error. She struck out two. St. Gregory's all-American Sharon Bell took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks. Kaylen Woosley relieved Bell in the fourth before Bell re-entered in the fifth.
Against Lubbock Christian, Melissa Moore pounded an 0-2 pitch over the right-center field fence for a two-run homer to break a scoreless tie with two out in the sixth. OCU opened up a 5-0 lead in the seventh using Murphy's two-run base hit and Kasey Hobens' run-scoring single.
Lubbock Christian's Raquel Hawkins drove in a run with a bases-loaded base hit in the bottom of the seventh to chase OCU starter Julie Harvey. Then Ginalee Davis added an RBI single before Elizabeth Oberst struck out Gabby Woody with the bases full to end the game.
Harvey (12-4) went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks, striking out four. Oberst retired the last batter to earn her third save of the year.
Marissa Gonzalez took the loss, moving to 28-6. Gonzalez worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.
Ellis went 2-for-3, while Moore and Murphy each had two RBIs. Hawkins and Lisa Stratton each had two hits for Lubbock Christian.
