LEWISTON, Idaho – Oklahoma City University completed its year in third place in the NAIA World Series after losing to Lee (Tenn.) 6-5 on Wednesday at Harris Field.
Lee rallied behind third baseman Josh Guy's two-run, eighth-inning home run. The Stars had taken a 5-4 edge in the top of the inning when Landon Camp parked an 0-2 fastball over the left-field fence for a two-run blast.
The fifth-ranked and second-seeded Stars ended their year 57-12. Third-ranked and top-seeded Lee (63-8) put itself in the NAIA championship game against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).
OCU made its 10th trip to the NAIA World Series in school history, earning its eighth series berth under coach Denney Crabaugh. OCU finished third for the third time ever.
The Stars have the nation's winningest program over the past 10 years, posting a 50-win season for an unprecedented 10th year in a row. OCU bested the NAIA single-season records for home runs with 147 – six more than its 1988 and 1999 squads – and doubles with 199 this year. OCU also broke team single-season school records for hits (901), batting average (.380), fielding percentage (.965) and total bases (1,581).
OCU captured its fifth NAIA Mid-South Super Regional title and Region VI championship this year after missing the NAIA World Series for two years.
"It had been like an eternity since we made it last," Crabaugh said. "I appreciated it better making it back this year. We'll remember this feeling and work hard to get back to Lewiston next year."
OCU led 3-1 through three innings. David Dennis mashed a two-run base hit to left, then Brent Weaver reached home on a wild pitch.
Lee came from behind with Clint Harrelson's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Brian Bistane's two-run double along the left-field foul line in the seventh. OCU countered with Camp's two-run shot in the eighth, but Lee responded with Guy's two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
Lee's Ryan Stovall ended the game striking out Brandon Moss with Sammy Lee, pinch running for Dennis, on first base and Garrett Regan on second base. Stovall earned his second save of the year, while Joel Matthews improved to 10-2. Matthews worked eight innings and struck out seven.
Tyler Kelsey worked seven innings and struck out three, but did not figure in the decision. Brad Riddle pitched the eighth and took the loss, falling to 3-2.
Camp, a junior second baseman from Edmond, Okla., was 2-for-2 with two runs driven in. David Mann was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Dennis, a senior first baseman from El Cajon, Calif., went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Dennis finished the year with 27 home runs and 115 RBIs, leading the NAIA in both categories. Dennis ended the year tied for the single-season school mark in homers with Nick Klusaw and Rick Nadeau.
