OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pitcher Mike Lee has been selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft on Friday.
The Boston Red Sox took Lee, a junior right-hander from Issaquah, Wash., in the eighth round with the 262nd overall pick.
Lee, a 6-foot-7, 220-pounder, posted a 10-2 record and 2.79 earned run average this year. Lee struck out 124 batters in 93.2 innings while walking 28. Opponents hit .222 vs. Lee.
Lee's signature performance of the year was a two-hit shutout against top-ranked Lubbock Christian on May 9 in the NAIA Region VI championships. Lee fanned 12 in a nine-inning, complete-game performance.
Lee also struck out 13 in 6.2 innings pitched vs. USAO on April 29 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
"He is a big right-hander who has stuff to dominate," OCU coach Denney Crabaugh said. "He was high on all the draft lists. He can throw it anywhere from 93 to 96 with an outstanding breaking ball. He is a pitcher who can light it up."
Lee transferred to OCU from Bellevue (Wash.), where he was all-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Northern Region as a sophomore. Lee had been picked by the New York Yankees in the 22nd round of the 2005 draft.
OCU has produced 56 draft picks and 120 professional players since 1978. The Stars finished third in the NAIA World Series and were 57-12, reaching 50 wins for the 10th consecutive year this season.
