OKLAHOMA CITY – Two-time defending NAIA Division I men's basketball champion Oklahoma City University has named Kevin Morrissey as its assistant coach.
Morrissey spent the past four years as head coach at Sooner Athletic Conference rival St. Gregory's. Morrissey starred locally in his playing days at Oklahoma Baptist in college and Bishop McGuinness in high school.
St. Gregory's went 36-86 and captured five wins over ranked NAIA teams under Morrissey. The Cavaliers knocked off fourth-ranked Southern Nazarene, No. 18 Northwestern Oklahoma State and NCAA Division II member Northeastern State in going this past season.
"I'm very excited to have Kevin on our staff with his experience as a head coach," OCU coach Tommy Wade said. "Being from Oklahoma and the conference are pluses for him. He's going to add a lot to our staff. He's what I needed as a first-year head coach. He will make huge contributions to our program."
Morrissey mentored St. Gregory's first NAIA all-American, Patrick Jones, who was also a three-time all-SAC selection and 2005 freshman of the year. St. Gregory's had four all-conference selections and two NAIA academic all-Americans under Morrissey.
Prior to St. Gregory's, Morrissey had served as assistant to Barry Hinson at Missouri State and to Bob Hoffman at Texas-Pan American.
Morrissey played collegiately at Oklahoma Baptist for Hoffman and Oral Roberts for Bill Self. With Oklahoma Baptist, Morrissey earned the Charles Stevenson hustle award in the NAIA Division I Tournament as a senior as the Bison finished as NAIA runner-up in 1997.
In high school, Morrissey became an all-stater in leading Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City to the 1992 Class 4A state title game as a senior.
