Oklahoma Baptist captured both the men's and women's Sooner Athletic Conference and Region VI cross country titles in Shawnee Saturday. OBU freshman Lauren Watson held off Kate Hudgens of Oklahoma Christian to win the individual title in 18:35, five second ahead of Hudgens.

OBU finished with 37 points in the region portion of the meet, followed by No. 14 Wayland Baptist at 52, Oklahoma Christian 68, Northwood 105, Southern Nazarene 127, College of the Southwest 177, Lubbock Christian 185, Langston 227, Huston-Tillotson 237 and St. Gregory’s 252.

The Lady Bison benefited from the first performance of the year by Kyta Willets. Willets, who has worked to recover from Morton’s Foot, placed fourth overall in 18:49.

“That is a good testament to the elliptical machine,” Mastin said. “It kept her in shape all this time until she was ready to compete. She worked hard to get back.”

Kyli Bean finished eighth in 18:59, Katy Rader was 11th in 19:40 and Becca Murdock was 13th in 19:31 to round out the scoring five. Also for the Lady Bison, Natalie Pedersen was 17th in 19:46 and Sarah Reihart was 23rd in 20:14.

The men’s team held off Wayland Baptist, finishing with 38 points to WBU’s 46. Oklahoma Christian was third at 56, followed by Northwood at 105, SNU at 123, Southwest at 150, Lubbock Christian at 206 and St. Gregory’s at 229.

WBU’s Felix Kiboiywo won the meet in 24:35, but OBU’s Theron Stoltzfus broke up the Pioneer’s Kenyan contingent, finishing second at 25:08.

Tyler Tyndell was fifth in 25:33, Michael Elizondo was seventh in 26:01 and Lance Goodwin was the fourth Bison in eighth at 26:06.

The difference came in both Baptist schools’ fifth man. While Josiah White of OBU finished 16th at 26:53; WBU’s Ryan Hall was in 23rd. White’s finish and Stoltzfus’ strong move into second kept the Pioneers at bay.
OBU’s team time was 12 seconds better than Wayland’s.

Also for the Bison, Jacob Wright was 19th at 27:04 and Justin Stroup was 26th at 27:50.

In the Sooner Athletic Conference standings, OBU won the women’s race with 33 points, followed by Wayland Baptist with 47, Oklahoma Christian at 55, Southern Nazarene at 103, Lubbock Christian at 140 and SGU at 173.

The All-Conference team includes Watson, Hudgens, Willets, Heather Ray of Oklahoma Christian, Tara Collins of Oklahoma Christian, Erin Britton of Wayland Baptist, Bean, Jennifer Baker of Wayland Baptist, Kristen Raines of Wayland Baptist and Rader.
