Andy Schatzley Talks to His Squad Following the NBC WS Title
LUBBOCK, Texas (August 17, 2009) - It has been quite a year so far for Lubbock Christian University baseball graduate assistant coach Andy Schatzley. After serving on the Chaparral baseball staff and being a part of the 2009 NAIA National Championship team, Schatzley spent the summer as the head coach of the El Dorado (Kan.) Jayhawk League squad. Being a grad student and coaching a baseball team in a league that also consists of former major league managers, like Liberal's Mike Hargrove, is a thrill in itself, but there was more in store for Schatzley. The El Dorado Broncos lasted through 11 innings and a pair of two-hour rain delays to outlast the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 2-1 in the wee hours Sunday to claim the championship of the 75th National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas.
The NBC World Series is held annually at Lawrence-Dumont stadium in downtown Wichita, and it is a premier wood-bat championship consisting of amateur teams throughout North America. From Satchel Paige to Lance Berkman, many big names have come through the NBC World Series and El Dorado's championship will add to the history of the NBC. The Broncos claimed the franchise's fifth NBC title and second in El Dorado (1998 was the last for the Broncos) while posting a 41-9 record under Schatzley. The Broncos also claimed their second Jayhawk League title en route to the NBC World Series. Under Schatzley's guidance, the Bronocs pitching staff surrendered 44 hits and 11 earned runs in 65 innings of work in Wichita for a 1.52 ERA. They also went 19-0 against non Jayhawk League opponents on the year.
Schatzley's success with El Dorado will lead to many stories with friends once he returns to LCU later in August to rejoins the Chaps baseball staff and complete his grad school degree. Last season was Schatzley's first season on the staff. Schatzley joined the Chaps staff after concluding a tenure as a student-athlete at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. The Paragould, Ark. native was a scholar athlete while playing baseball in college. The infielder spent the 2005 and 2006 season at Pratt Community College (Pratt, Kan.) prior to transferring to Lyon College.
