Although the Lady Chaps lost in straight sets, they had their moments in the match. LCU took the lead on nine occasions in the opening set and led as late as 21-20, but the Tigers used a pair of kills from Bertke to close out the set on a 5-1 run for a 25-22 set win. The second set was tied 4-4 until LCU surrendered three aces and committed six attack errors during a 14-4 Tigers run. The Tigers claimed the second set 25-12. It appeared the Tigers were going to cruise through the final set, as they had a 16-7 and a 20-13 lead, but the five attack errors and three ball handling errors by the Tigers led to an 11-3 Lady Chaps run and the Lady Chaps were setting at set-point with a 24-23 advantage. The thoughts of an LCU comeback vanished as Georgetown (41-2) closed with a 3-0 run to claim the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
Bertke's 11 kills co-led the match with LCU's Kelsey Odell. Amanda Philpot contributed a double-double for Georgetown with a match-high 29 assists and 14 digs. LCU's Courtney Yonke led the match with 26 digs.
LCU (27-6) is now 0-1 in pool play and in a similar situation as they were in last season. In 2008, the Lady Chaps dropped their pool play opener to Biola University and rebounded with wins over Madonna University and Lewis-Clark State to advance to single-elimination bracket play. To duplicate their feat, they would need to win their 3:15 p.m. match Wednesday over Columbia College and a 1 p.m. contest Thursday against Lee University. LCU is now 12-17 all-time in national championship play and 5-3 under head coach Jennifer Lawrence. Georgetown is now 6-0 all-time against LCU and 3-0 in national championship meetings.
